The assistant Minister of Health and Wellness Mr Sethomo Lelatisitswe has explained that the Letsholathebe Memorial Hospital clinical wastewater is not drained into Thamalakane River.
Answering a question during the meeting of Ntlo ya Dikgosi on Tuesday, Mr Lelatisitswe explained that clinical waste was collected through a local sewer system and discharged to a local wastewater treatment plant which is operated and managed by Water Utilities Corporation.
“As per the relevant local authority, wastewater collected from the hospital is treated through a Trickle Filter Wastewater Treatment Plant located within the hospital,” he said.
He said the product from the plant was closely monitored and discharged into a pond located within Botswana Wildlife Training Institute and allowed to overflow to the natural outfall
Kgosi Heindrick Ramokwena of Maun region had asked if the minister was aware that Letsholathebe Memorial Hospital clinical wastewater was drained into Thamalakane River thereby posing a health hazard to the Maun Community, animals and vegetation as the river is a water source for Maun and surrounding villages.
