Gaborone- based eye specialist, Dr Ethel Monggae, has donated seven eye glasses to Mogobane elders.

Dr Monggae of Vision Clarity Optometrists said most elders were in dire need of eye care services.

She said Vision Clarity Optometrists decided to assist after realising a need for eye care among the elderly.

Dr Monggae noted that Vision Clarity Optometrists had also assisted elders in other parts of the country with eye care services.

Furthermore, she said her company also assisted learners who were in need of reading glasses.

Another official from Vision Clarity Optometrists, Mr Victor Monggae, said sight for the elderly was a challenge that  needed to be addressed.

He said World Health Organisation (WHO) had identified the second Thursday of October as World Sight Day.

He said the annual day was aimed at raising awareness on global attention on blindness and vision impairment.

Mr Monggae explained that worldwide, it was estimated that one billion people had a preventable vision impairment.

He said reduced or absent eyesight could have major and long-lasting effects on all aspects of life, including daily personal activities, interacting with the community, school and work opportunities and the ability to access public services.

Mr Monggae stated that majority of people with vision impairment were over the age of 50 years, although vision loss could affect people of all ages.

Former Ramotswa MP, Mr Samuel Rantuana, thanked Vision Clarity Optometrists for its generosity.

He said the organisation partnered with his office when he was still a member of parliament to offer free services to the elders.

Mr Rantuana said even after vacating the office, their relationship continued and they organised eyesight clinics for the elders in the constituency.

He said initially his office transported elders to Gaborone for the eye care services but later Vision Clarity Optometrists decided to bring their services to Mogobane.

Therefore he made an appeal to Ramotswa constituents to support Vision Clarity Optometrists. Ends
