Department of Technical Services (DTS) plays a critical role in ensuring that the Ministry of Basic Education achieves its objective and mandate, says Mr Fidelis Molao, Minister of Basic Education.
When addressing Department of Technical Services staff in Gaborone recently, Mr Molao said there was need for the Department of Technical Services to be agile in the delivery of projects for the ministry’s mandate to be achieved.
“We are at the foundation of the economic set up of the country and as such, when we ask for better exam results from our teachers and learners, we first have to do our part in ensuring that there are adequate facilities for a conducive learning environment,” he added.
He urged the staff to re-engineer their processes to be in a better position to deliver projects, as incomplete projects had negative implications for the ministry, such as incompetence and corruption.
Mr Molao thus advised staff to introspect and do their best to complete projects on budget and on time.
Acknowledging the challenges that the department faced, he promised them full support, adding that technical services should deliberately empower Batswana contractors to ensure citizen economic empowerment.
For her part, DTS Acting Director, Dr Masego Motlhagodi said despite the challenges, such as shortage of key personnel, vandalism of school facilities and financial constraints, they had completed and delivered five major projects throughout the country, with only one pending.
Minister Molao also visited Matlala Junior Secondary School in Tlokweng. Ends
