GCC to convert abattoir into transfer station

Gaborone City Council (GCC) intends to convert the city’s abattoir plot into a waste separation and transfer station.
The GCC abattoir closed operations in 2009, due to its failure to meet the health requirements.
The GCC’s Senior Public Relations Officer, Ms Segametsi Kebonang told BOPA in an interview that the facility was very costly for the council, as its maintenance cost were over what the council was getting for it, hence the decision to close it.
Ms Kebonang said to avoid destruction and also to prevent criminals from using the facility as a haven for criminal activities, the council had engaged Ipelegeng workers to debush the area, adding that it was also under the watchful eye of security personnel. ENDS
