Kalpataru Power Transmission Limited has been commended for going beyond its mandate following a donation of a two-roomed house to Legothwana Village Development Committee.

Speaking at the house handover event on October 12, Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Mr Sethabelo Modukanele, said the VDC would be able to make money through rentals.

He said the donation came at a time when government had realised the need to review Ipelegeng programme.

He appreciated that Kalpataru made use of locals as artisans and acquired materials locally which was key for economic empowerment.

Mr Modukanele also touched on the issue of gender based violence (GBV), saying there was need to engage with men since they were mainly perpetrators of violence against women and children.

He said GBV should be uprooted from the society.

Kalpataru Legothwana sub-station citizen empowerment officer, Ms Dineo Lebati, said the company was engaged by Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) for the northern part of the country power grid.

She said they were committed to ensuring Batswana had opportunities and jobs from the power project.

Ms Lebati said the Legothwana Sub-station had sub-contracted LNH Company, which was a local company that employed 34 Batswana while Kalpataru had employed 45 citizens.

She said, through the corporate social responsibility, Kalpataru had so far donated to schools in the Ngami region and held awareness campaigns on issues of HIV/AIDS and GBV in Legothwana and nearby villages.

Ms Lebati said Legothwana VDC house construction commenced in August this year after the power grid company identified the need for a permanent project that could be a source of income for the village.

She said the house was constructed by residents while the materials were sourced from Toteng. She said additionally the house was electrified and the company built a toilet and fenced the Legothwana kgotla. ends
