COVID-19 impacts Chevening scholarships

06 Sep 2020

British High Commissioner to Botswana, Ms Sian Price has implored this year’s Chevening awardees to work hard and lift this nation’s flag, as they resume their studies in the UK.

Speaking during the send-off ceremony on September 4, Ms Price said this year’s cohort was smaller than the previous years, due to COVID-19 related challenges. She however expressed delight that they were still able to offer a global scholarship programme, that would provide the scholars with a rich experience at the UK’s world-class universities.

She noted that because the Chevening selection process was highly competitive, only 10 per cent of applicants from over 50 000 eligible applications made it to the interview for the 2020/2021 period.

Ms Price commended the five recipients for having made it through the whole process, adding that their inspiring stories of resilience and courage embody the spirit of the talent Botswana had to offer.

She encouraged them to not only excel, but experience everything the UK had to offer beyond the classroom such as its rich arts and culture, the fascinating historical sites and museums, among others.

For his part, Chevening alumni, Mr Obakeng Sethamo urged the awardees to be ambassadors of this country, adding that upon their return they would be expected to contribute immensely to the Chevening alumni.

He added that they were the ones who could take this nation to greater heights. ENDS
