Obie best female bowler at African tourney

A local bowler, Obie Mosimanyana was named female player of the tournament at the recent African States Bowls Tournament (ASBT) which took place in Windhoek, Namibia from September 8 to 14.
Botswana had sent a 10-member team to compete in the singles, pairs, triples and fours categories. Even though the team did not bring any medals, Obie caught the umpires’ eyes as an outstanding player among all the seven countries that were competing.
Her team beat Kenya 35-1 and South Africa 22-11 in the fours category and drew with another strong contender-Zimbabwe. Botswana obtained an overall position five for both men and ladies teams, while South Africa topped the overall standing of the tournament for both categories.
“It was a surprise for me because I did not know exactly what they were looking for to qualify one for player of the tournament. I am happy because this shows my growth in bowling,” explained Obie in an interview. She noted that for them to have won against a strong South African team and drew with Zimbabwe in the fours was a good achievement.
She said this recognition, which came with a trophy, would motivate her to work stronger and aim higher in other competitions. The Botswana Bowling Association chairperson, Kitso Robert alluded Botswana’s loss to poor mental strength.
“South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe play lots of international games during the cause of the year that is why they performed well during the tournament. Unfortunately the same cannot be said about our teams because our players are permanently employed and we don’t have enough funds to participate in international tournaments,” he explained
He, however, said they would solicit sponsorship so that they prepare well since Botswana will be hosting the same tournament next year. He also noted that they would employ a permanent coach since the current one came as and when required.
Apart from the home ground advantage which they intend to capitalize on, Kitso further said they would beef up their teams with young people.
“Next year will be better for us because some of our best players are school children and therefore we could not take them to Namibia since they were writing examinations,” he noted.Ends
