Environment, wildlife and tourism minister, Mr Tshekedi Khama has vowed to work with churches to preserve religious cultural heritage left by missionaries.

Speaking during the official launch of Dr David Livingstone bi-centenary commemorations and groundbreaking for construction of the gate house of the tour destination at Kolobeng , Minister Khama said it was through Community Based Natural Resource Management (CBRNM) programmes that government recognised communities as key stakeholders in the management of heritage sites.

“The partnership of my ministry with the UCCSA church and the Kumakwane community here at Kolobeng is testimony to the commitment of government to communities and varied stakeholders in the care, protection and promotion of heritage sites,” he said.

He said UCCSA played a key role as the church that evolved out of the London Missionary Society (LMS). He therefore urged UCCSA congregation to be aware of the fact that they were the soul of Kolobeng site and a living testimony of the enduring work of Dr David Livingstone that started among the Bakwena in 1847.

The bi-centenary commemorations, as Minister Khama indicated, would entail numerous activities that would run between now and next year March that will include a special publication on the life and work of David Livingstone, public lectures and an exhibition.

‘The special publication planned for November this year will entail authorships by various scholars and historians of my ministry, the University of Botswana, the UCCSA and members of the Kumakwane community,” he said.

The exhibition as minister Khama stated will be geared towards school groups and will be displayed on site in partnership with the National Museum, the British High Commission and the British Council.

Planned infrastructure at the Kolobeng site include development of trails, erection of signage and brochures. “All these activities are to enhance the visitor experience at heritage sites,” said minister Khama.

Meanwhile, UCCSA Synod Chairperson Rev Keloneilwe Kgerethwa has challenged Christians to be aware of their roles as clearly defined in the bible and ensure preaching the word of God and make people understand that God is the ultimate solution to any problem facing humanity.

For his part Kweneng South Member of Parliament, (MP) also Health Minister Rev Dr John Seakgosing expressed gratitude over the fact that the church remembered to involve government in its undertaking.

He as well called for community and civic leaders to come up with dazzling ideas that can be incorporated into that of Dr Livingstone which will be at the best interest of their congregations.Ends
