04 Aug 2020

The construction of Sefhare storm water drainage  system was expected to be completed January 31, 2018, but the contractor  has abandoned the project since July 2018.

This was said by the Minister of Transport and Communucations, Mr Thulagano Segokgo when answering a question in Parliament on Monday on behalf of Minister of Land Management, Water and Sanitation Services.

He said the efforts to ensure that the contractor completed the works had been fruitless and the ministry was in the process of terminating the contract and procuring another contractor to complete the work.

“The construction of the storm water drainage system in Borotsi, Chadibe, Mokobeng and Sefhare villages were done in three projects,” he said

He said that the Machaneng Drain Works Project commenced in August 2008 and was successfully completed in June 2010.

“The culvert installation and rehabilitation of Borotsi Village Drainage Works Project commenced in November 14, 2017 and successfully completed in July 14, 2018,” he added.

He said that during the undertaking of the above-mention projects,  only one business was affected under the rehabilitation of Sefhare village drainage works project.

“Vehicular access to one shop in Sefhare was obstructed, making it difficult for vehicles to access the shop,” he said

He said that his ministry had not received any reports of injuries to individuals or loss of lives due to incomplete or open drains.

He was answering a question in Parliament from MP for Sefhare/Ramokgonanmi, Dr Kesitegile Gobotswang, who had asked the minister to update Parliament on construction of storm water drain system in Borotsi, Chadibe, Mokobeng and Sefhare villages and to state when the projects started and when they would be completed.

Further, Dr Gobotswang asked the minister to  update the number of businesses affected and if compensation would be considered for the losses from disruptions caused by the projects as well as to state the number of individuals who were injured or died as a result of incomplete and hazardous open trenches.
