Church gives out blankets to elderly
12 Sep 2013
Giving to the elderly is an answer to the President`s noble call to take care of them, says councillor for Kanana ward in Francistown, Mr Ace Ntheetsang.
He was speaking at the handover of 15 blankets to 15 elders by Lesedi Christian Church on September 11. The councillor commended the church for the handover and he explained that his generation and those behind owed their existence to the sacrifices that the elders made. He said, the good upbringing that the elders gave to their children helped to shape them into responsible citizens.
Cllr Ntheetsang thanked the other churches that he said had also been giving such items as groceries for the needy and meeting other needs. The church’s Bishop Fatty Mokgethi said for a perfect church was one that also gave.
Bishop Mokgethi said his church ascribed to the biblical tenet that ‘blessed is the hand that gives than the one that receives.” He explained the blankets were bought with contributions from his church members. The bishop further said that they hoped to one day see a situation in the country where the church took the lead in dealing with issues afflicting the nation.
He also noted that the gift was in line with Vision 2016’s pillar of a compassionate just and caring nation. He said his church targeted the elders because they could no longer do much to support themselves.
The handover act was also a way of thanking them for their various contributions they made in the community. The Social and Community Development (S&CD) officer from Gerald Estates, Ms Patricia Ngwengwe encouraged other community organsations and individuals to emulate the church. ENDS
