'Over 7 000 families given food hampers in Kgatleng'

Kgatleng District Council senior public relations officer says 23 231 households have been assessed in the district for the COVID-19 food relief response.
Speaking in an interview, Mr Isaiah Morewagae said of the total assessed households, 7 771 distressed families had been assisted with food baskets to date.
He said even though the district had not yet started supplying the affected people with agricultural products; they had provided families with vegetables.
Mr Morewagae further noted that the district had engaged 11 unemployed social workers’ graduates and two retired social workers since April 13 to help with assessment process.
Mr Morewagae said they also had 653 expatriates who had not been attended to in the district, noting that they had come up with various interventions to mitigate such challenges.
He said a list of such expatriates had been submitted to the ministry for further engagement, while the district council continued to educate the community on adhering to lockdown restrictions.
“We have also involved Village Development Committee members to identify those who were not assessed so as to get a clearer picture and assist those that need it most,” he said.
Mr Morewagae further noted that the district had engaged 11 unemployed social workers’ graduates and two retired social workers since April 13 to help with assessment process.
On payment of beneficiaries, he noted that 506 old age pensioners, four World War II veterans, 82 destitute people and 25 disability cash allowances had been paid since the extreme social distancing period to date.
He further indicated that there was also an influx of people coming to Mochudi from other villages, which had increased movement and concentration of people.
He also raised a concern about the number of people going to the fields. ENDS
