Education has long been dubbed humanity’s great equaliser, but in the South East Region, a little recognition has proven to be the secret spark powering classroom success.

Gathered under the theme: Royal Excellence: Crowned Amidst the Economic Crunch, educators, learners and support staff recently came together for the South East Region’s third annual excellence awards. 

The event was a testament to how a culture of appreciation can turn around the fortunes of struggling schools.

According to regional officials, schools that once lagged in academic metrics are now turning the tide and the secret is motivation and celebration that inspire both teachers and learners to raise the bar year after year.

Delivering keynote remarks, Botswana Gambling Authority, chief executive officer, Mr Moruntshi Kemorwale said an educated citizenry remained the bedrock of a prosperous and sustainable nation.

“Every lesson taught and every learner supported contributes directly to building a stronger Botswana,” Mr Kemorwale said, commending the nominees for their dedication and professionalism. 

He also expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Child Welfare and Basic Education for the invitation, saying it was a privilege to stand alongside those shaping the country’s future.

Speaking on behalf of the Minister of Child Welfare and Basic Education, secretary for general education, Mr Steve Botlhasitse, indicated that recognising top performers was now anchored in the ministry’s 2026/27 performance plan.

Mr Botlhasitse applauded the South East Region for its consistently strong showing in the national examinations, attributing the achievements to the tireless commitment of everyone in the school ecosystem, including the often-unsung heroes behind the scenes.

“While teachers inspire learning inside the classroom, non-teaching staff provide the essential foundation that allows our schools to function effectively. Awardees, we are proud of you. It is your dedication that is truly pushing this ministry forward,” he said.

Award winners were urged to see their achievements as proof of what visionary leadership can accomplish, while those who walked away empty-handed were reminded that excellence was not a single destination, but an ongoing journey. ends
