Police snatch seven border jumpers
12 May 2020
Ramotswa police have over the weekend arrested four males and three females for entering the country illegally.
Ramotswa Police Station commander, Superintendent Keoagile Tau told the South East District COVID-19 response meeting on May 11 that the suspects were arrested during the police routine patrols and all of them were Batswana who entered the country from South Africa.
Supt Tau however said the suspects were in possession of legitimate travel documents.
He said some crossed into South Africa legally in November last year, while others crossed into that country in February this year and the lockdown came into effect while they were still in South Africa.
The suspects have been taken for quarantine and they will be duly charged for their wayward behaviour at the end of their quarantine period because 'their actions compromised the effort to curb the spread of the virus'.
For her part, South East District Council chairperson, Mr Oshima Peloewetse emphasised the need for punitive actions against those who put the country at risk.
"The COVID-19 regulations should have stiffer penalties for people who continue to cross the border in and out of the country illegally". ENDS
