Public transport resumes operations

Public transport will resume operations following the easing of extreme social distancing regulations.
Briefing the media today (May 9), permanent secretary in the Ministry of Transport and Communications, Ms Alicia Mokone, said public transport such as taxis, mini-bises, cabs, staff buses and hired buses will resume operation as the country goes for phase two and three of easing of lockdown.
All public transport opened for public will operate within a 60 kilometer radius. However, she stated that passenger train, domestic flights as well as long distance buses will still be on suspension.
Ms Mokone noted that transport operatots would be expected to adhere to Emergency Powers Act and extreme social distancing regulations.
She said all public transportors will be expected to carry a permit, disinfect in and out at least two to three times a day and passengers will be expected to use sanitizers and wear masks at all times.
To continue practicing extreme social distancing, Ms Mokone said with the recommendations from health officials, a 70 per cent seating capacity on all public transport will be allowed.
She indicated that a 16 seater combi will now carry 10 passengers, a taxi will carry three passengers, 65 seater bus to carry 46 passengers whilst a mini bus of 22 to carry 15 passengers.
Furthermore, Ms Mokone said all passengers must be registered in a passenger list containing their details.
On other transport services, Ms Mokone noted that renewal of vehicle license discs and driving licenses among others will still be on suspension.
Ms Mokone indicated that as part of service efficiency, her ministry was working on an ICT project that will eventually allow road users to renew their vehicle licenses online, as a way to ease congestion at Department of Road Transport and Safety offices. ends
