Debswana Diamond Company group manager, Mr Boyce Sebetela has encouraged students to take subjects such as Mathematics and Sciences seriously as careers related to them are still in demand in the country.

Mr Sebetela , who was addressing students at a prize giving ceremony at Rutwang Junior Secondary School on September 6, said Debswana will be in operation up to the year 2050 and this therefore is a guarantee that professionals in the fields of geology, mining, chemical engineering, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering will be needed.

He encouraged students to put more emphasis on their studies, adding that starting from next year Debswana will sponsor those with 46-47 points in the Botswana General Certificate of Secondary Education (BGCSE) to study mining related subjects abroad.

He said students must realize that parents and teachers are there to assist them prepare for the future but the whole responsibility of realising their future depends on them.

Mr Sebetela further told students that family background should not be a determinant of their future but the determining factor is how they apply themselves.

He urged parents not to only go to school when their children have been beaten but encouraged them to also visit schools to check on their children’s performance.

Mr Sebetela donated P10 000.00 on behalf of Debswana to the school.

The School head, Mr Kwenakgolo Tokwe said since 2009 there has been a slight improvement in the school’s JC results and there was need for all stakeholders to unite in order for results to continue improving.

Mr Tokwe said the school is committed to improving the results despite the deteriorating condition of the school buildings.

He said they were hopeful that this year there will be major maintenance of schools but due to hiccups realized during the tendering process, the maintenance cannot be carried out.

On other issues, he said PTA needs P800 000.00 to construct a board room, noting that currently the computer room is used as a venue for meetings.
Kgosi Goitsheka Hetanang raised a concern about parents who buy cellphones for their children.

He said the cellphones do not only distract owners but are also stolen by those who do not have them.

He observed that some students carry expensive cellphones that could also attract thieves from outside school.

The theme of the prize giving was “Promoting higher academic achievements”. Ends
