Education, skills and development minister, Dr Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi has vowed to take stern action against ill-behavior portrayed by some students in tertiary learning institutions.
Speaking during the handing over ceremony of P5 000 and an academic excellence floating trophy to Gobuamang Memorial School recently, Minister Venson-Moitoi assured the gathering about her intention to root out the appalling conduct evident in local tertiary institutions through severe action.
She said it was disgusting to realise how children’s immoral behavior was increasing citing the recent alleged statement made by one student accusing her for being a liar without fear.
Dr Venson-Moitoi insisted that the behavior required stakeholders’ collective efforts to come up with strategies to curb the situation before the future of individual students was ruined. She urged parents to take responsibility and understand that the upbringing of children lied with them and should not sit back and expect government to go it alone.
Dr Venson-Moitoi emphasised that, Gobuamang school’s academic excellence was an avenue towards realising the nations’ long term vision in sphere of education, adding that the path will as well lead the school to the promised land of an educated and informed nation by 2016.
“I do salute the commitment, dedication and hard work by the management, teaching and non- teaching staff parents as well as students. Despite being in a rural area, your results continue to bear testimony of your hard work,” she said.
Gobuamang Memorial Primary school scooped first position in Kweneng South Constituency out of 15 schools and also became first out of 26 schools in the Mogoditshane Thamaga sub region and became fourth out of 91 schools in Kweneng Region.
The education minister encouraged parents to work jointly with teachers through Parent Teachers Associations (PTA) for the betterment of their own children and further reminded them that educating children does not rest with teachers alone but their responsibility as well
She further challenged parents to make children perceive education as the form of inheritance and priority in life.
Meanwhile, the area Member of Parliament, (MP) Rev. John Seakgosing also advised student to take control of their own lives and protect themselves to stay healthy and desist from alcohol and substance abuse.
