Projects A wins first aid champs
09 Sep 2013
Jwaneng Mine's all time first aid champions, security department, over the weekend succumbed to projects A and ore processing sections and settled for position three in a fiercely contested interdepartmental competition.
The five-member teams underwent individual tests with different case scenarios before they could proceed to a team test, after which a casualty simulation test summed up the whole competition to determine the ultimate winner.
Project A proved to be a cut above the rest as they scored a total of 183 points and walked away with a trophy and each team member was awarded a P1 000 cheque alongside other goodies. Ore processing B came second with two points less and pocketed P700 each, while third placed security department team members walked away with P500 each.
Even though mining A had come out with guns blazing during the first two categories of individual and team tests respectively, it did not fare well in the last part of the competition hence settled for position four.
Other team members who failed to make it to top positions were awarded a consolation prize of first aid kit for each member. The top three have proved to be the crème de la crème hence would ultimately represent Jwaneng Mine at the inter-mines first aid competitions pencilled for Jwaneng in October.
Commenting after the competition, chief judge, Dr Mwamba Nsebula noted that from the small margins between teams, it was evident that all of them worked hard towards the competition but in the end there had to be a winner.
He said there was even a thin margin between the highly placed teams and those at the bottom, something which he alluded to the hard work that teams put towards preparations. He noted that the teams that did not win had also displayed good performance and that was a good thing for the mine’s safety principles.
Botswana Mine Workers Union (BMWU)-Jwaneng branch vice chairman, Mr Omponye Gababolokwe also acknowledged the growth and improvement of the first aid competitions over the years. He said every year competitors showed a great deal of improvement from the previous years, hence should be lauded.
He congratulated all the teams, saying he was optimistic that those who won will represent Jwaneng mine well at the Inter-mines competitions next month. ENDS
