Women's league kicks-off without a sponsor

05 Sep 2013

The first round of the national women’s football super league will kick-off on September 21 without a sponsor, although officials remain confident a financier will be secured soon.

The women’s football league was left without a sponsor after long time guarantor, AT&T Monnakgotla pulled out at the end of last season. The transport services company had been sponsoring the league to the tune of P300 000 in the past three seasons. The women’s football league was started 13 years ago.

The treasurer of the national committee, Oaitse Moeti, confirmed in an interview that the league will kick off without a sponsor, but expressed optimism that a sponsor will be secured as the league goes on.

“We are currently engaged in talks with two companies which have not yet responded to our proposals. Two other companies have rejected our bid citing financial constraints,” she said.

Moeti added that lack of sponsorship will not stop them from starting the league and revealed that the committee is working round the clock to secure an alternative sponsor.  Makufa Sporting Club from Mogoditshane will join the women’s football premier league this season.

In the first round, Prisons Girls will play against Big Sisters at Prisons grounds while league champions Double Action will lock horns with Manana Sporting Club at Bosele Primary School grounds.

In other league games, Meat Girls will take on Blackburn (formerly known as Eastern Pirates) at New Look grounds while Vicomates will play against Gaborone United at Marulamantsi grounds.

In the last season, league champions Double Action walked away with P30 000, followed by Township Rollers with P21 000, and Meat Girls at third position with P18 000. ENDS
