Molefi Secondary School is a 42 stream school having 21 Form Four and Form Five classes respectively due to pupil population increase.
Assistant Minister of Basic Education, Ms Naniki Makwinja said the increase in pupil population came into being after the last senior schools national expansion programme between 2000 and 2007 when the pupil population increased by 23.7 per cent from 1 188 pupils to 1470.
She said current enrollment stood at approximately 1 680, and that there were no plans in NDP 11 to build another senior secondary school in Kgatleng.
Ms Makwinja stated that senior schools were national schools and that pupils were placed where there was space to accommodate them.
She said pupils were not expected to rent accommodation as Molefi Senior Secondary School had ample boarding facilities, adding that pupils placed outside their normal catchment area were provided with boarding.
She said her ministry was aware that some parents requested of their children into specific schools out of choice and some may subsequently rent accommodation.
Furthermore, she said the ministry intended to increase access to senior secondary education through the provision of additional facilities in schools in NDP 12.
Kgatleng East MP, Mr Mabuse Pule had asked the minister if she was aware that the pupil population at Molefi Senior School had grown though the school facilities had not been expanded to cater for their numbers.
Mr Pule had also requested the minister to state if government had plans to build another senior school in Kgatleng. ENDS
