Councillors must help generate income
03 Sep 2013
Councillors in Mahalapye Sub-district have been requested to come up with innovative ways of generating income for the council.
Speaking at opening of the council on September 3, the council chairman, Mr Moatshe Senai said the council was still heavily reliant on the revenue support grant.
Mr Senai revealed that the sub district’s tentative budget for 2014/15 was P124 117 230, which represented a 20 per cent increase from the P104 046 946 approved in the 2013/14 budget.
“The increase is meant to cover among others, the 3 per cent salary increase, councillors’ terminal benefits, vehicle replacement and stationary for schools,” he said.
He expressed concern that the council was still generating very little income, and urged officers to find other means of generating revenue for the council.
Mr Senai also pointed out that schools in the sub district were running short of stationery because of budgetary constraints. “We are unable to budget the P450 per pupil for stationery as recommended. However, we have increased the budget from P120 per pupil to P300 in the 2014/15 tentative budget,” said Mr. Senai. ENDS
