Put service ahead of political ties
04 Feb 2020
Councillors and MPs have been asked to put serving their communities ahead of political affiliations.
Addressing kgotla meetings at Mmashoro, Dimajwe and Malatswai recently, Serowe West MP Mr Tshekedi Khama advised representatives to desist from advancing personal interests or those of their political patrons but to focus on the welfare of Batswana. Mr Khama also urged representatives to approach issues with a purpose of positively contributing towards enriching the livelihoods of Batswana and not to gain political mileage.
“Together, let us lead our community to become vibrant and flexible individuals who are not afraid to think creatively and proactively,” he said.
He said political affiliations could stand in the way of the country’s development cautioning that political wrangling should have no place if legislators were to make progressive decisions.
Mr Khama said currently his constituency office was not operational as an administration officer had not yet been employed.
He noted that the state of affairs denied constituents an opportunity to access services.
On another issue, he promised to give his constituency more time by working together with local leaders and village committees since he no longer held a ministerial post. In their comments, residents decried poor academic results in their areas, dilapidated classrooms and toilets.
They also raised concern about plot allocation which had long been halted. Another concern was about high water bills charged by Water Utilities Corporation. ENDS
