Mahotshwane decries clerk absence

26 Jan 2020

Kgosi Mohurutshi Maipolelo of Mahotshwane in the Jwaneng/Mabutsane constituency has called on government to provide a court clerk for his kgotla.

Speaking during a kgotla meeting addressed by the area Member of Parliament, Mr Mephato Reatile recently, Kgosi Maipolelo said absence of a court clerk led to piling of cases, though they relied on assistance from Sekoma court clerk, who was available few days a month.

“In some cases, when she is supposed to come help us, there is no transport to pick her, which forces us to postpone cases. This is also the case with police officers because we do not have any stationed in our village, so we also rely on those from Sekoma,” he said.

Kgosi Maipolelo said the population of his village had more than doubled since his installation, which then called for his elevation to enable him to have an assistant.

“My elevation will mean that I will have to have an assistant, and this will help in a big way as the tribal business of this village is overwhelming, especially that Mahotshwane also serves the nearby farms” he said.

Kgosi Maipolelo also complained about shortage of water, although some boreholes had long been drilled with the promise that they would be a solution for the water challenge.

In his response, Mr Reatile acknowledged the need to elevate Mahotshwane kgosi, but said what was more urgent was the provision of a court clerk for the village.

He said this would boost his case for elevation since dikgosi were mostly elevated on the basis of cases they tried annually.

Meanwhile,  Kanye Management Centre general manager, Mr Ditiro Mogotlhwane said water shortage in Mahotshwane would persist until next year due to a long process required to connect it to the said boreholes.

He said the challenge they faced was that the land between boreholes and the village was managed by a different department and that they had made an application to lay their pipes, something which was still being assessed.

“After assessment there will be the designing of the pipe layout, which is expected to take a further six months, then followed by a tender for the project.

So we can safely say that the water will reach this village only next year,” he said.

Mr Mogotlhwane also indicated that at the moment, they could not bowse for the village from the said boreholes since there was no proper road and that making a temporary one would be expensive.

Still on the same day, Mr Reatile addressed a kgotla meeting in Sekoma where he informed residents that the national population census would be conducted next year as per the norm.

He also said a pilot exercise would be conducted this year, which would mostly entail training for both officers and members of the public.

He, therefore, urged residents to cooperate with the officials and fully participate in the national census as it would determine important factors in their lives, such as development projects needed in their area.

For their parts, residents complained of lack of notable developments that could boost the status of their village such as a bigger clinic. ends
