26 Jan 2020

Selebi Phikwe West member of parliament says time has come to review SPEDU mandate.

Addressing a kgotla meeting in the town recently, Mr Dithapelo Keorapetse expressed concern that SPEDU had only managed to create about 1 000 jobs,  which he said was not satisfactory.

He suggested that more government departments open shop in Selebi Phikwe to generate jobs for the youth.

Mr Keorapetse said he had suggested to Parliament that BIUST establish a campus in Selebi Phikwe to make use of BCL infrastructure.

He explained that the earth tremors that had been troubling residents had decreased in frequency because water from the mine had been drained and monitoring continued.

The MP said he was aware of the damages on some houses though it was not clear whether they were caused by the tremors or not.

“It is going to be difficult to determine what caused these damages in order to compensate complainants,” stated Mr Keorapetse.

The MP also told residents that several companies had shown interest in opening some parts of the BCL mine.

Mr Keorapetse said he was also aware that students were being cut off from brigades and vocational training colleges and pleaded with the relevant minister not to forsake students.

Selebi Phikwe mayor, Mr Lucas Modimana commended Mr Keorapetse for engaging residents and advancing their interests at Parliament.

He advised reidents to be in touch with their councilors and the MP’s office. Kgosi Ghani Moses of Kagiso ward asked Mr Keorapetse to assist residents ideas on how they could improve their lives. ENDS
