02 Sep 2013

Kesego Rabolai of Majwanaadipitse in the Central District scooped the Miss Serowe Sub Authority Remote Area Dwellers title during a beauty competition in Serowe on August 30.

In a bid to uplift and nurture talent amongst the RADs youth, 24-year-old Kesego beat 16 other girls to become the RADS queen, while Magdalene Blacky and Masego Modupe, both from Malatswai became the first and second princesses respectively.

The event saw young girls from the settlements of Sehunou, Malatswai, Majwanaadipitse and Dimajwe competing against each other on the ramp. In an interview, delighted Kesego explained that she did not hesitate to enter the competition because “I knew I was going to be the queen”.

Kesego noted that, as youth in rural areas, they were faced with many challenges, amongst them, HIV and AIDS as well as drug and alcohol abuse, as such, she entered the pageant in order to show others that they too could make it. She said she wanted to be a role model to others and that she would form educational clubs so that she could reach out to her peers.

The queen, who finished her Form Three in 2008, said she now worked as a house maid at Majwanaadipitse. “But that is not where my heart is,” she regretted. Her inspiration was to become a teacher so that she could help promote education at Majwanaadipitse, she pointed out, adding that she had since applied for the back-to-school programme and was still waiting for a reply.

For her part, senior assistant council secretary, Duduetsang Omphile, said the objectives of the beauty pageant were to promote and brand RADP, encourage behavioral change and promote inclusiveness. Omphile said the event was also to build self-esteem and identify talent among the RADs youth. ENDS
