Accidents cripple economy - police

07 Jan 2020

Moshupa Police Station commander, Superintendent David Ramoseki says road accidents can cripple the economy.

Speaking in an interview on January 6, he expressed concern that government spent a lot of money training people who would in turn lose their lives to road accidents.

Supt Ramoseki called on motorists to drive with caution, lamenting that accidents devastated a lot of families in Botswana.

He said accidents could cause deaths, injuries and loss of property as well as reduce the quality of life and cause loss of property, thus contributing to poverty.

Supt Ramoseki’s annotations came after one person died in a road accident in his policing area during the just-ended festive season.

He said they also recorded an accident in which a mini-bus and a car collided, leading to the admission of the mini-bus driver at Gaborone’s Princess Marina Hospital, while others were treated at Mma Seetsele Clinic in Moshupa and discharged the same day.

Meanwhile, the police boss said road traffic offences in his policing area increased to 360 during the 2019/2020 festive season from 260 during the 2018/2019 festive season.

He said road traffic offences ranged from driving without a licence, overtaking at a barrier line, driving a vehicle with defects and speeding, among others.

However, he said the festive season was calm in the Moshupa Sub-district as Batswana displayed first class etiquette, which is a sign that the merry-making in humility, peace and tranquility message had not fallen on deaf ears.

Supt Ramoseki said bar owners also observed operating times, attributing the good conduct to the house-to-house campaign and the importance of neighbourhood watch canvassing that they had prior to the festive season.

He said they also had a clean-up campaign on illegal aliens, as well as strategic patrols, sporadic road blocks and speed traps.

He said on other crimes, they registered 31 offences in 2019/2020 festive season as opposed to 30 during the 2018/2019 festive season, while they recorded six rape offences as opposed to one during the 2018/2019 festive season. Ends
