De Beers International Company currently has interests in nine mines and seven marine vessels globally, all owned in a joint venture or have minority partners, the Minister of Mineral Resources, Green Technology and Energy Security Mr Lefoko Moagi has said.
Responding to a question in Parliament, the minister said the names of the mines as per country were as follows: Botswana - Jwaneng, Orapa, Damtshaa, Letlhakane (tailings treatment) and South Africa - Venetia.
In Namibia, Marine operations are MV Debmar Atlantic, MV Debvar Pacific, MV Gariep, MV Grand Banks and MV Mafuta; as well as SS Nujoma for sampling and exploration. Namibia’s land operations are Daberas, Sendelingsdrift and Southern Coastal recovery areas. For Canada, the name of the mine is Gahcho Kue.
He further said De Beers International Company, through underlying subsidiary companies, had sold the following mines in the last 10 years.
The mines sold include Elizabeth Bay Mine (Namibia land operations), Kimberly Mines tailings, Namaqualand Mines, Finsch Mine and Jagersfontein (South Africa).
He also highlighted that in the past 10 years, Botswana government had received dividends in an amount of US$61.8 million from De Beers.
The minister was answering a question from Jwaneng/ Mabutsane Member of Parliament, Mr Mephato Reatile, who wanted to know the number of mines owned globally by the De Beers International Company, the number and names of the mines/concessions sold by De Beers for the past 10 years and the dividends/proceeds derived by Botswana.
