15 Dec 2019

Nominated councillor, Mr Keebonye Mphoyamodimo, has requested a detailed report on the status of Maun Technical College (MTC) .

Speaking during a council session in Maun recently, Mr Mphoyamodimo said, despite the college facing some challenges, the council had never been furbished with a report to that effect.

Cllr Mphoyamodimo made the remarks when responding to the chairmperson’s speechssue was not captured in the speech.

He said some of the college’s challenges included students overcrowding, unaccredited courses, poor performance and student allowance disparity.

He some students had spent six months without attending classes because the courses they had applied for were not offered at the college.

The said students, he said, were oriented at the college.

Cllr Mphoyamodimo wanted to know where the college management reports in the district structure noting that their issues were not covered even in the District Development Committee reports.

Mr Rizerua Kazenambo of Disana ward concurred that the situation at the college left a lot to be desired.

He complained about shortage of resources and that the learning environment was not conducive resulting in students suffering.

He said the college was the only tertiary in Maun, but was not given the necessary attention such as other colleges across the country.

Councillor Luke Motlaleselelo of Bojanala ward requested explanation regarding Lake Ngami Conservation Trust asserting that the trust was not operating as expected.

He said the manager’s contract had long expired and up to date there was no recruitment of the new manager to run the trust.

In addition, he said the trust had never been audited since it started operation and asked why there was a delay.

Councilor for Sehithwa/Kareng, Mr Petrus Tjetjoo stated that the trust was faced with challenges noting that it was operated by the board members.

He further noted that the trust resources were not supervised citing the utilisation of vehicles.

Another issue that was debated at length was the location of a night club in the centre of the shopping complex.

The club opened door last year and some councillors questioned how it was licensed especisally that it was sandwiched by financial institutions, government departments, parastatals and other businesses. Okavango Sub-district Council chairperson, Cllr Mpote Karapo called on the council to consider relocating the club. Ends
