Secretary urges councillors to deliver on promises

Central District councillors have been challenged to take their work seriously and deliver to the expectation of the electorate.
The councillors took an oath of office during a full council session that commenced in Serowe on December 9.
Central District Council (CDC) secretary, Mr Godimo Garegope urged them to strive to leave a lasting legacy.
He encouraged councillors to work as a unit and put their political party caps aside when in council to work for the common good of bringing developments to the district and improving the lives of residents.
Mr Garegope urged councillors to work hand in hand with civil servants to realise objectives of the local authority.
He also told councillors to upgrade themselves academically.
“We are leading a learned society and we should always be informed to pursue our duties accordingly and also improve on how we render our services,” he said.
Mr Garegope reminded councillors that they were in council to serve the people and not their own interests.
“We need to work together as a unit, councillors and civil servants in order to reach the common goal of bringing developments and uplifting lives of people in the wards they are representing’’, he said.
He encouraged councillors to be at the forefront of issues so that they were better positioned to deliver, something he said was a critical component of leadership.
“You cannot be a leader if you do not understand issues, you must read to inform yourself,” he stated.
Furthermore, he told councilors that for them to efficiently discharge their mandate, it was important to understand the functions of government and the direction that they ought to take to develop the people.
He added that councilors must not rest on their laurels, but work day and night to deliver on their mandate.
He encouraged councilors, who were sworn into office by the Central District Commissioner, Mr Rapetse Mathumo to be exemplary, be honest, impartial, respectful, accountable, selfless, integrity and exercise transparency at all times.
Councilors were further drilled on the Local Government Act and other legislations governing councils, history as well as powers of the council, general duties and responsibilities. Ends
