03 Dec 2019
Parliament has learned that 33 private motions were adopted in the 11th Parliament with seven being on the 1st session, six on the second, six on the third while seven where adopted on the 4th and 5th session respectively.
Assistant Minister for Presidential Affairs, Governance and Public Administration, Mr Dumizweni Mthimkhulu stated that 45 motions were adopted during the 10th Parliament. Furthermore, Mr Mthimkhulu highlighted that Standing Order 117 provides for the establishment of the committee on government assurances.
The committee, he said, was charged with exercising parliamentary oversight and scrutiny over assurances and resolutions made in Parliament.
He said the committee had to report the outcomes or results of the examinations to the National Assembly at least once every session. Mr Mthimkhulu said the committee experienced challenges such as lack of quorum and time constraints during the 10th and 11th Parliament, and as such, there were assurances backlog dating back to the 10th Parliament.
He also explained that the committee was yet to report to Parliament its findings and recommendations. He said the new committee for the 12th Parliament had been constituted and would hopefully meet and address the assurances backlog.
The assistant minister said he was unable to draw up an implementation schedule of the said motions since the responsibility for their implementation was with different government ministries.
Bobonong MP, Mr Taolo Lucas had wanted to know the list of the adopted motions during the 10th and 11th Parliament. Ends
