Entrepreneurship modules embedded in syllabi

03 Dec 2019

Assistant Minister of Basic Education, Ms Nnaniki Makwinja says entrepreneurship modules are embedded in relevant syllabi rather than taught as a stand-alone subject.

Responding to a question in Parliament from Member of Parliament for Kanye North, Mr Thapelo Letsholo, Ms Makwinja said entrepreneurship was covered in business subjects at junior secondary level such as accounting as well as commerce and office procedures whilst at senior level it was covered in business studies and commerce. She further said it was integrated with development studies, design and technology and guidance and counselling.

Ms Makwinja said the benefits of teaching entrepreneurship to secondary school pupils was to get them ready for entrepreneurship life for 21st century global demands, preparation for self-employment, job creation and promotion of saving culture.

She added that her ministry was currently undertaking curriculum reforms which would see the introduction of entrepreneurship as a stand-alone subject to be accessed by learners across all levels of education, saying that entrepreneurship and financial literacy knowledge and skills have been recognised by her ministry.

Mr Letsholo had asked the minister to state the positives that could come from teaching entrepreneurship to secondary school pupils. He also asked when the subject would be introduced as a stand-alone, and how long it would take to be implemented. Ends
