Pottery business thrives

27 Nov 2019

Mr Ngongorego Mogakolodi (39) of Serowe is prove that disability is not inability.

A year ago, he began running a pottery and ceramics business after he got approval for funding from the Department of Gender Affairs.

He was partially assisted with only a potter’s wheel, which is only part of the equipment needed for the business. He, however did not let that deter him as he kicked off his business, making clay pots, dishes, sculptures, cups, vases and other types of craftwork. He further said that he can also create decorative pieces.

Mr Mogakolodi explained that potters can craft anything using clay and sometimes he depends on their customers to tell him what they want. He said he started school at Tlamelong Rehabilitation Centre where he was enrolled in cookery and horticulture. He said though he appreciated the training he got, he felt that he was not yet into his passion.

Mr Mogakolodi said that he did not allow his disability to deter him from achieving his dream and thus went for training in pottery at Camphill Centre for the Disabled at Otse in 1993 where he also worked until 2011, when he felt that he was ready to open his own business.

He said he also worked at Boiteko pottery in Serowe, where he was also offered further training in pottery.

He said that though he is still waiting for some of the equipment from the department of gender affairs, he makes sure that he has something at his stall at Serowe main mall, adding that he has children to support.

He said the department of bought him pottery wheel and a tester in July last year and for him to have a fully-fledged project, he would also need kiln, glace and clay and he is patiently waiting for them.

He explained that he uses the pottery wheel to shape whatever he is doing and a kiln is used to dry and harden the clay. After the piece has baked in the kiln, it is removed, painted, and then glazed.

He said he is always creative when he does his job because he comes up with new ideas that are appealing and unique.

He said at the moment he hires the equipment that he does not have from other potters to make whatever he has planned to do.  He said he is happy about his job because people visit his stall and are supportive of him. ENDS
