Reservoir repair affects water supply

24 Nov 2019

Rehabilitation of the collector reservoir at Mogome treatment plant which took five months to be completed resulted in the interruption of water supply at Tewane village.

Responding to a question from the Mahalapye West MP, Mr David Tshere in Parliament recently, the Minister of Land Management, Water and Sanitation Services Mr Kefentse Mzwinila said water supply interruptions occurred often when there were other operational challenges like water pipe bursts, unplanned power cuts as well as maintenance of water infrastructure.

Mr Mzwinila said his Ministry was not aware of the rationed water in Tewane. He, however, indicated that the rehabilitation of the project in Tewane prolonged water supply interruptions that called for daily bowsing to the village.

He said during this period, Tewane village was supplied with one truckload daily from Mahalapye, adding that the total cost of bowsing amounted to P90 000.

The water demand for Tewane village is 150m2 per day against the supply of 160m2 per day resulting in a surplus of 10m2 daily.

Mr Mzwinila said the water situation in Tewane was back to normal as the village was supplied from Mogome treatment plant. Furthermore, Mr Mzwinila noted that his ministry through Water Utilities Corporation was currently working on the terms and references for the project to connect the four villages of Radisele, Mogome, Mokgware and Tewane to North-South Carrier, a project that was expected to be completed by June 2022.

Mr Tshere had asked the minister to explain why there was water interruption in Tewane and if he was aware that residents were being rationed water in the village. The Member of Parliament had also asked Minister Mzwinila to state the cost and quantity of bowsing water by trucks from Mahalapye. ENDS
