Masisi calls on voters to retain BDP

02 Sep 2019

President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi has called on voters in the Selebi Phikwe East constituency to vote for Botswana Democratic Party’s prospective parliamentary  candidate, Mr Amogelang Mojuta and council hopefuls in large numbers.

Speaking at the launch of the candidates on Saturday, Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi who is also BDP President said it was incumbent upon the voters to retain BDP in power.

He said by voting for Mr Mojuta and the council candidates, the party faithfuls would be ensuring that peace and tranquility which had been characteristics of Botswana prevail.

Dr Masisi said in Mr Mojuta, he saw a political protégé of Minister for Presidential Affairs, Governance and Public Administration, Mr Nonofo Molefhi.

However, the mentor and the protégé had requested the democrats, to exercise their democratic rights upon which the losing candidate would respect the winner, the BDP leader said.

He called on the democrats to canvass for votes from all eligible voters across political party divide by selling the party policies as ascribed in the manifesto.

The president said that the BDP candidate was the best candidate to be voted for in Selebi Phikwe for its astute and robust approach to challenges.

He said that Selebi Phikwe challenges must be faced truthfully like the BDP does.

In the BDP, Dr Masisi said, exists a party that faced challenges even amidst harrowing pains, but would devise avenues of placating the situation.

The president cited BCL mine as one of the troubles besieging Selebi Phikwe, but informed the gathered democrats that for more than 35 years the mine was running unprofitably. He explained that government had to keep bankrolling the mine that had employed about 4 500 Batswana.

The president dismissed as ‘cheerleaders of pain’ opposition activists who he said were always scavenging for painful situations to tap into as opportunities to counter the ruling party.

President Dr Masisi enumerated some government interventions that sought to address unemployment in Selebi Phikwe.

He said that government was luring potential investors to resuscitate the ailing town’s economy.

He revealed that he would lead a team to South Africa to meet a renowned farmer who has done research on fruits farming with a view to assist in fruits farming in the Selebi Phikwe and Bobirwa region.

Dr Masisi said that the project had the capacity to employ 1000 people before packaging and processing.

For his part, the Selebi Phikwe East prospective MP candidate thanked the president for selling him to the voters and promised to be truthful.

Mr Mojuta said that unlike some who had deserted the voters and decamped to opposition parties, his team would stay true to aspirations of the party.

BOMASE regional chairperson Mr Master Mmereki had earlier told the BDP gathering that despite the internal wrangling that rocked the party following Bulela Ditswe, the party was a united force going to general elections. ENDS
