Ecological footprint reduction key in mining

01 Sep 2019

Reduction of ecological foot-print of human activity while achieving economic gain is important in ensuring the world is habitable past the industrial age.

That was said by Debswana mine closure planning manager, Mr Bond Keaketswe in an interview at the just ended consumer fair.

Mr Bond said collaboration of sectoral players within the broad scope of the socio-economic divide needed to come together in formulating smart approaches to address environmental impact of human activity.

He noted that understanding the environmental context within which businesses operated was important as it ensured cohesion with regulatory protocols that subsumed internal working processes.

Acknowledging that mining operations were environmentally disruptive, Mr Bond, explained that Debswana operated in a manner that minimised impact to the environment while also practicing sound processes to reduce impact on the societies that lived around their mining operations.

He noted strategic perspectives that the mining company used which included environmental and data indicators and preservation of biodiversity plans as some of the environmental disciplines for Debswana.

Also, he said the company was engaged in measures to increase efficiency and productivity while at the same time maintaining environmental sanctity.

“We are currently exploring dry processing, to reduce the amount of water used in our processing operations, this is water that could better be used in Agriculture,” he said.

He further said the company was exploring the use of carbon sequestration or carbon capture and storage to reduce the amount of carbon in the atmosphere thereby avoiding destructive climate change. ENDS
