Ministry aware of cracking houses

07 Aug 2019

The Assistant Minister of Land Management, Water and Sanitation Services, Mr Itumeleng Moipisi, says he is aware of house cracking cases in Palapye Extensions 5, 6, 7 and 9.

Mr Moipisi told Parliament that Botswana Geoscience Institute (BGI) has been engaged to undertake a study to identify potential and natural constraints that could impact on development and infrastructure provision as well as affect future land use planning such as geotechnical, topographical and hydrological conditions.

He also said the study was on-going and expected to be completed next month.

Mr Moipisi said upon conclusion of the study, the outcome would be shared with the residents through the available government institutions such as council, district administration, land board, tribal administration and others.

He further said the results would inform government on what actions to take to address the situation residents found themselves in saying possible options would include relocation or recommendation of construction methods that could withstand the conditions.

He was answering a question asked by Nata-Gweta MP, Mr Polson Majaga, who had asked the minister if he was aware that residents of Extension 6 in Palapye had been allocated land in a flood prone area and if so, to state whether it was true that there was a company that had been engaged to carry out an assessment at the said area.

He had also asked if the outcome of the assessment would be shared with the said residents. ENDS
