No monitoring mechanisms on outsourcing

Minister of Employment, Labour Productivity and Skills Development, Mr Tshenolo Mabeo has told Parliament that there are no monitoring mechanisms on outsourcing of services by businesses in Botswana.
Responding to a parliamentary question on July 29, Mr Mabeo said the outsourcing of functions by business was a decision that could only be taken by individual businesses which was often informed by efficiency in the provision of service.
He said there was no information on the number of jobs created in other countries as a result of outsourcing of services because it was not obligatory for business entities to report on outsourced services. “As a ministry we are not aware of any law that prohibiting businesses from outsourcing their services,” he said.
Francistown South MP, Mr Wynter Mmolotsi had asked how many jobs were exported to other countries in the name of outsourcing services such as auditing, accounting, marketing by companies based in Botswana and why those companies were allowed to outsource services when qualified locals were available to perform such functions.
He further asked if there was any mechanism used by the ministry to check the extent to which this was practiced. Ends
