Minister of Employment, Labour Productivity and Skills Development, Mr Tshenolo Mabeo has informed Parliament that the programmes offered at Jwaneng Technical College were auto mechanics, heavy plant, electrical installation, maintenance fitting, welding and fabrication and plumbing and pipe fitting.

The programmes, he said, were mining related and were offered up to certificate level. He said that electrical, business, carpentry, bricklaying and ICT programmes were accredited while plumbing, welding and fabrication, maintenance fitting and auto mechanics were in the process of being accredited.

He further said that the minimum requirements for engagement to teach at the college were diploma in the relevant programme and a teaching qualification.

However, he said there were some trainers who held national craft certificate qualification in the relevant programme.

“We are continuously searching for trainers with the required qualifications,” he said.

He also said prior to industrial attachments, students underwent induction which prepared them for attachments.

He said in addition, students also did practical and workshop practice using models as a way of exposure to real life practice.

The minister explained that submissions for the reviewed curricula under BQA regulations had made for registration and accreditation whch he said was ongoing.

MP for Jwaneng-Mabutsane, Mr Shawn Ntlhaile had asked the minister if he was aware that Jwaneng Technical College did not offer technical courses designed to equip students with competencies and skills required by mining labour market, and if so, to state the programmes and levels of qualification offered by the college, status of accreditation of each programme, qualification requirements for teaching staff, preparation of students for industry attachments and plans in place to address the problem.Ends
