Ipelegeng temporary relief programme
23 Jul 2019
Government has no plans to recognise the Ipelegeng Programme as a job where people can be employed on a six to 12 months contract, says Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Kgotla Autlwetse.
Mr Autlwetse told Parliament that Ipelegeng was aimed at providing short term employment, support and relief to the economically disadvantaged members of the community on a rotational basis.
“It emphasises on the relief as opposed to employment and it is self-targeting.
Every able-bodied person aged 18years and above, who is economically disadvantaged, regardless of their educational background or experience, was eligible for engagement.
Therefore, the programme does not cover severance pay and gratuity,” he said.
He was responding to the question asked by Gaborone North MP, Mr Haskins Nkaigwa, who had asked if there were any plans by government to recognise the Ipelegeng Programme as a job employing 6-12 months contract so that they could benefit from severance pay and gratuity. ENDS
