Totuma strives to grow

11 Jul 2019

Totuma Arable Commercial Farmers Association (TACFA) chairperson Mr Jan Erasmus has encouraged farmers to pursue farming on a commercial scale and graduate from subsistence farming.

Speaking during the association’s general meeting recently, Mr Erasmus said this could only be achieved if there was mindset change among farmers with the focus being on business.

The meeting was for retrospection of the activities of the year 2018/2019. He also encouraged farmers to improve production per hectare, adding that in carrying out their agricultural activities, they should use the right crops which would survive climate conditions in their respective areas.

Mr Erasmus also emphasised on the importance of soil testing before ploughing to maximise production.

He informed the members that the annual Totuma field day was suspended this year noting that nonetheless, clusters like Masunga celebrated harvest day which was a success.

Mr Erasmus also briefed the members about the association’s partnership with the Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crime (DCEC) which was intended to fight corruption.

He appreciated efforts by the Ministry of Agricultural Development and Food Security for the support they had always accorded the association.

He further advised the clusters to work together at their respective areas for the good returns.

TACFA vice chairperson Mr Stephen Pillar said the meeting created a platform for the exchange of ideas, amend and appreciate agendas.

“Let’s consider ourselves as the commercial farmers we are, and stop regarding ourselves as sustainable farmers. This only, will help us go somewhere,” he added.

The vice-chairperson advised farmers to research on the markets well on time before planting for the next season takes place saying it would help them know their target market. ENDS
