Labour ministry dismisses eight from employment

Ministry of Employment, Labour Productivity and Skills Development, Mr Tshenolo Mabeo has told Parliament that a total of eight employees have been dismissed since 2017.

Minister Mabeo stated that out of the eight dismissed, two were at D band, three at C band  and three at B band. 

He said reasons for dismissal ranged from wilful neglect of duty, dishonesty, corruption, and soliciting bribery from customers, falsifying receipts, refusal of transfer, desertion and absconding from duty which were all in contravention of the Public Service Act provisions.

He stated that two officers at D and C bands were on suspension pending investigation for allegations of corruption and involvement in commission of an offence.

A total of 18 employees, he said had resigned, of whom one was at E band, three at D band, 10 at C band, three at B band and one at A band, adding that it was not mandatory for public officers to give reasons for resignation,

The ministry, he said  however has information to the effect that of the 18 officers that have resigned, seven have joined the private sector, while six have gone into self-employment and the other five did not give reasons.

He said three C band officers have been warned for habitual absenteeism and acts of theft at the Department of Labour and Social Security, Department of Occupation Health Safety and Department of Skills Development respectively.

Minister Mabeo indicated that eight officers had appeared for disciplinary hearing in the ministry since 2017 to date while five employees had lodged trade disputes with Labour office ranging from allegations of delayed progression, payment of scarce skills allowance and payment for retrospective acting appointment.

He said his ministry did not have a record of officers who had gone to the Office of the President with complaints or lodged a case with the Industrial court, but a total of seven employees had however lodged cases with the high court.

Selebi Phikwe West MP, Mr Dithapelo Keorapetse had asked the minister to state the number of employees who had been dismissed and their salary scales since 2017 to date as well as the number of workers who have taken the Ministry to labour  offices complaining about trade disputes. ENDS
