Co-operative transformation strategy pivotal
27 May 2019
Botswana Power Corporations’ (BPC) Maitlamo Savings and Credit Cooperative Society (SACCOS) members and stakeholders had been implored to embrace the co-operative transformation strategy geared towards sustaining the organisation.
Speaking during Maitlamo SACCOS 2019 annual general meeting on Saturday in Francistown, Botswana Co-operatives Association (BOCA) chairperson, Mr Thatayotlhe Mpule said it was pivotal for members to have ownership of the strategy so to achieve set goals.
He said the transformation strategy with eight pillars was earmarked to drive the co-operatives models in the country.
The BOCA chairperson said that he was alive to the 2019 AGM theme, A Consistent and Strategic Business Continuity, A Key to Sustainable Growth, adding that it complements the intentions of Maitlamo to address the social and economic needs of the members.
“There is need to balance your deliberations as a SACCOS to achieve consistent growth,” he said, adding that growth was for the business as well as its members.
Further, he said co-operatives model in Botswana should act as a defensive organisation against rural indebtedness and be a vehicle for investment. He challenged Maitlamo to play a significant role in the economy and development of Botswana and Africa at large.
He added that a credit union should take into consideration issues such as good governance, co-operative legislation, youth and woman participation when laying down their strategic goals.
Mr Mpule said good governance across all sectors was instrumental to attaining set goals and was widely acknowledged as a precondition for sustainable growth and development.
He said the union should strive to manage the society in an effective and efficient manner, knowing that such efforts would create jobs, alleviating unemployment in the process.
He applauded Maitlamo SACCOS members and stakeholders seeking to empower BPC employees through the co-operative model. He noted that BPC had embarked on transformation journey and remodeling of its business and staff rationalisation.
“The right sizing of staff by BPC will affect Maitlamo membership base, which calls upon your leadership to open your membership common bond to accept all qualifying citizens in the country,” he said. ENDS
