Botswana Books Projects Organisation has donated 100 solar study lights worth P12 000 to Gakuto Primary school.
Speaking during the donation, Botswana Books project director, Mr Ezekiel Malenya said through the donations were a response to government’s appeal for all stakeholders, government employees and private sector, to unite in empowering the education sector hence addressing the societal needs.
Mr Malenya said the donated study lights which were to be given to 24 standard seven pupils were intended to assist them to studying after hours at home.
He also applauded the Gakuto community for displaying interest in their children’s education adding that their attendance at school events was always satisfactory.
“I appreciate parental attendance and their support as members of the community. It shows that you are responsible and want the best for your kids, hence inspiring them to grow as accountable citizens,” said Mr Malenya.
He said they found it appropriate to donate to the school because they recognised the importance of education, hence the need to empower and offer support to students.
Mr Malenya also added that education needed to be driven through a collective responsibility which he said was evidently upheld at Gakuto Primary School.
He said they were hopeful that the lamps would be cared, adding that they previously donated them to other communities but their efforts were thwarted by beneficiaries who misused them.
“I urge you to care for these lamps, they have a charging portal for phones, therefore I don’t want cases whereby parents take advantage of that and deny pupils to use them for their purpose,” he said.
In an interview, the deputy school head, Ms Elizabeth Motlogelwa said she appreciated the support they had been getting from Mr Malenya and his company adding that they recently donated computers to the school.
She said the school which had an enrolment of 543 pupils encountered growing enrolment due to overflow from greater Gaborone area.
Ms Motlogelwa stated that the school had a staff compliment of 50 members including non-teaching staff and that they worked as a team to achieve good results.
She also commended the village leaders and parents for their support.
She said the donated lamps would motivate pupils to work harder. ENDS
