Small stock farming has potential
24 Apr 2019
The Member of Parliament for Maun East, also assistant minister of Agricultural Development and Food Security Mr Konstantinos Markus says small stock farming is manageable and has potential in markets.
Mr Markus said this when addressing residents of Old Disana ward in Maun on April 23.
He therefore encouraged the residents to harness small stock farming, adding that goats and sheep were less affected by deadly diseases and drought resistant as compared to cattle.
The assistant minister said it had been established that markets were available for small stock.
MP Markus also encouraged the cattle farmers in the area to sell some of their cattle to benefit from them lest they all succumb to drought.
He also encouraged the Ngamiland farmers to utilise other government programmes such as Livestock Management and Infrastructure Development (LIMID).
Regarding developments in Old Disana, Mr Markus advised the residents to choose between an internal road and one LA2 house through Constituency Fund next year.
He said this following a request by the Old Disana Village Development Committee (VDC) that at least four LA2 houses should be built to generate income. Old Disana VDC
Chairperson Mr Magola Setuki appreciated the government for the development of an office in their Kgotla. Mr Setuki noted that funds to furnish and electrify the office had been secured as well.
He said funds amounting to P100 000 had been allocated through the 2019/2020 budget for the procurement of furniture. Nonetheless, Mr Setuki said they had requested at least four LA2 houses in the next financial year to develop their two plots as an income generation for their VDC.
He observed that VDCs in the area struggled to find private investors.
Some residents complained about shortage of water in the area and requested the MP to help secure storage water tanks. ENDS
