Youth should support one another - expert

07 Apr 2019

Tedco Technologies founder and marketing director Ms Ellonah Seleke has encouraged the youth wanting to start businesses to pick the right partners and know that individuality in business was a myth.

Speaking after a sponsored walk organised by Mighty Choristers Gospel Choir in Mochudi recently, Ms Seleke said no one could do business alone, hence the need to partner with the right people that would help one advance their dream.

“I would also like to plead with parents to support their children’s dreams because without a strong support systems, dreams die,” she said.

Ms Seleke said it was also important to always associate with positive minded people and not allow anyone to tell you it is not possible.

“The sky is the limit and if you work hard and have love for what you do you will succeed,” she continued.

She further said it was worrying that youth businesses continued to close down because most want instant success.

“There is no such thing as instant success. Instant success in business is always short-lived. Business is not easy and it has a lot of challenges that one should be willing to face and unravel,” said Ms Seleke.

She noted that it was also important for people to have a helping spirit, especially people that are close to them and around their communities.

Ms Seleke said support should be a second nature to most and in life or business you should help three people that would in turn help other three people, and so on and so forth.

“This is what builds communities and it helps with elevating people doing different things and eventually all of us would be successful, that is if we help and support one another,” she said.

“Do not be your own failure,” she said, adding that market research was also an important aspect of any successful business.

Speaking on her business, Ms Seleke said Tedco Technologies was a-year-old waste management company that mostly got work from the private sector and individuals.

“In our short existence, I have never benefitted from government tenders and I would like to appeal to everyone to support us so we grow and in turn we help others as well,” she said.

She said she had two offices in Tlokweng and Gaborone, and it was her dream to have an office in her home village Mochudi.

Mighty Choristers Gospel Choir, in partnership with Tedco Technologies with the support of Moshawana Village Development Committee and Kgatleng District Council held a five kilometre sponsored walk from Pilane Crossing Mall to Isang Primary School, which culminated into a 60-minute cleaning campaign around the area with the end destination being Motswere Freedom Square.

For his part, Moshawana councillor Mr Joseph Setoutwe said he was happy to see many young people taking part in the sponsored walk and cleaning campaign.

“We all know that most young people at this time are nursing hangovers and some are even still at bars, which hurts me most,” he said.

He said the youth should leave bars to old people and focus on making a living for themselves.

“We the old people go to bars to unwind as we do not have much time left on earth, but the youth are the ones wasting away and not doing anything significant with their lives,” he continued.

Mr Setoutwe said he was proud of Ms Seleke.

“This young lady is a role model to many and I wish many would emulate her. I want to encourage the youth to startup businesses, partner with Ms Seleke and even bench mark from her,” he said, adding that the council had outsourced services such as waste management and it was up to the youth to do business with it.

Mr Shadrack Segale, chief organiser of the sponsored walk and clean up campaign said the Mighty Choristers Gospel Choir was a clap and tap choir, registered legally with more than 87 members.

He said they saw it fit to organise this initiative as it involved health and cleaning up the environment.

“Our theme for today is #Our Environment, Our Responsibility and it resonates with us very well,” he said, adding that their main objective at the choir was to be youth-oriented and remove the youth away from the street to do meaningful initiatives.

Mr Kabo Tsele, chairperson of Mighty Choristers Gospel Choir thanked all stakeholders that took part in the sponsored walk among them Motor Vehicle Accident Fund and Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sport and Culture Development.

He appealed for assistance for their choir so that they could grow and have a meaningful impact on people’s lives and the community. ENDS
