DCEC receives over 1 000 reports in 2018 - Shamukuni

Parliament has been informed that between January and December 2018, 1 058 reports were received by the Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crime (DCEC).

Assistant Minister for Presidential Affairs, Governance and Public Administration, Mr Machana Shamukani said of the total, 279 reports were classified for investigations while 15 were referred to the intelligence division as they lacked information and were sent for further development.

The MP for Jwaneng/Mabutsane, Mr Shawn Ntlhaile had asked the minister to state the number and status of cases investigated by the DCEC that were ready for prosecution, including those of the former director of Directorate on Intelligence and Security (DIS).

The assistant minister also explained that 593 were referrals, reports that involved maladministration and did not fall under the directorate’s mandate.

He told the House 107 reports were advice to complainants while 61 were reports that augmented ongoing investigations.

“In relation to the former director of DIS, DCEC has one investigation file in relation to him. The file is currently at the DPP,” he said.

Mr Shamukuni further noted that during that period, 20 investigations were completed and forwarded to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for prosecution.

He said between January and December 2017, the DCEC received 1 174 reports, 352 classified for investigations, 18 needed further development, 663 referred to various organisations.

Furthermore, Mr Shamukuni pointed out that 88 reports constituted advice to complainants, 53 were received as reports to matters already being investigated by the DCEC.

In addition, he said 38 investigation files were completed and forwarded to the DPP for prosecution.Ends
