Law prohibits loud music at bars

28 Mar 2019

Liquor (Amendment) Regulations, 2015 stipulates that music played at bars should not be loud, says Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, Ms Bogolo Kenewendo. Responding to a question in Parliament, Ms Kenewendo said the rationale of this was to ensure that the consumption of music was for those within the premises.

In addition, she said ‘Section 32 of the Liquor Act, 2003 prohibits the sale of intoxicating liquor to persons under the age of 18 and also prohibits them entry to liquor selling outlets’.

Ms Kenewendo stated that ‘the Act also provides for a penalty of a fine not exceeding P5 000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding one year or both for a licensee who delivers, sells or allows a person under the age of 18 years to enter or remain in the licensed premises’.  Further, she cautioned that music played could be a factor that attracted under age children to the bars and might also impact negatively on their school performance.

MP Moagi Molebatsi of Mochudi East had asked Ms Kenewendo if she was aware that loud music played at bars attracted under aged children and also impacted negatively on their school performance. Ends
