Huawei global CSR programme leverages on ICT technology

28 Mar 2019

Seeds for the Future is Huawei’s largest global Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme and aims at leveraging its world class ICT technologies.

Huawei managing director Botswana, Mr Ren Fujun said this when giving remarks at the Seeds for the Future 2019 awards ceremony.

Mr Ren said the programme aimed to support ICT professionals in countries where it operated and drive the local ICT industry forward.

He stated that at the beginning of 2019, they selected 10 students from the most outstanding 50 students from the University of Botswana, Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST) and Botho University.

He said the ICT competition was a global platform for exchange of ideas and an important part of Huawei’s talent development strategy.

Mr Ren also noted that in 2017 they invited the University of Botswana and Botho University engineering students to take part in the ICT competition, and that 60 ICT students were included. He said only 11 managed to pass the Huawei technical certification.

The managing director said since entering Botswana in 1998, Huawei has grown to become a leading ICT solution provider.

“While Huawei is developing itself, it also attaches great importance in giving back to local communities in the country, and has a total staff complement of 80 Batswana employed by the company with a total of 80 per cent localisation rate,” he said.

He wished all the 10 students who would be leaving for China next month good luck on their learning trip where they would be given Huawei’s latest technologies and solutions.

He  also urged them to make the most out of the experience, and to bring back their knowledge for a better future for themselves and the country.

For his part, the Chinese Ambassador to Botswana, Mr Zhao Yanbo said the visit would be an unforgettable experience for the students.

He further said he believed Huawei would continue to do its best to contribute to Botswana’s development.

“If you want to go far go together. China looks forward to joining hands with Botswana and further deepening our bilateral cooperation not only in ICT and infrastructure, but also in all other areas,” he added. ENDS
