Arone explains admission of visually impaired

A total of 22 visually impaired students sat for Primary School Leaving Examinations (PSLE) in the Kgatleng District, Minister of Basic Education, Mr Bagalatia Arone has said.
Answering a question in Parliament on March 27, he said in 2016, five PSLE pupils got C, one D and one E, while in 2017, three wrote and two got grade C and one D.
He said in 2018, 14 wrote PSLE and one got Grade B, two C, nine D while two got Grade E.
He said the ministry continued to strive for excellence and would never be satisfied with such results.
Mr Arone further said the ministry was employing a turnaround strategy in schools to ensure that Special Needs Learners could access the curriculum despite their challenges.
He said this included the mandatory use of scribes and readers along with remediation and extended time when writing examinations.
Mr Arone said all the 22 visually impaired learners who sat for PSLE in the Kgatleng District in the last three years were admitted at Lentswe Junior Secondary School.
He was answering a question from Mochudi West MP, Mr Gilbert Mangole, who had asked how many visually impaired pupils sat for PSLE in Kgatleng District in the last three years.
Mr Mangole also wanted to know the results obtained by those pupils and how many of them proceeded to junior secondary schools in the respective years.
He also asked if the minister was satisfied with the performance of the pupils and if not why; as well as explain the steps to be taken to improve the pupils’ performance. Ends
