Pedestrian crossing ensures pupils safety

The Ministry of Transport and Communications is aware that a number of pupils cross the A1 road from Morwa village to and from Borwa Junior Secondary School on a daily basis.
Responding to a question in parliament on March 20, Minister Dorcas Makgato said signalised pedestrian crossings at the Morwa/Bokaa junction along the A1 road had been put up to ensure the safety of the pupils. She, however indicated that the pedestrian crossings were not working due to vandalism.
Ms Makgato noted that to address the problem, the ministry was working with that of Local Government and Rural Development to source funds to reinstate the signals, adding that works were expected to start in either May or June this year. The minister on one hand explained that there were no plans to construct an overhead bridge to facilitate the crossing of students during NDP 11.
She agreed nonetheless that a feasibility study needed to be carried out to establish the best safety method to be used, and she assured parliament that the Department of Roads would look into the matter. MP for Mochudi West Mr Gilbert Mangole had asked if the ministry was aware that a large number of students crossed the A1 road on a daily basis from Morwa to and from Borwa Junior Secondary School. Mr Mangole had wanted to know the measures in place to ensure the safety of the students when crossing the high traffic volume road as well as when government intended constructing an overhead foot-bridge to facilitate safety of students and other people when crossing the road.
