The Pilane landfill reached its design lifespan in 2010, parliament has learnt.

Answering a question in Parliament, Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Ms Botlogile Tshireletso, said Pilane landfill was commissioned in 1995 and was to receive waste from Mochudi and surrounding villages with a design lifespan of 15 years.

She said the new landfill had been planned to be built at Dikwididi during NDP 11/DDP8 but could not be accommodated in the plan due to budgetary constraints.

“However, it will be considered along other priorities during the Midterm Review of NDP 11,” he said.Ms Tshireletso further said contingency measures put in place to deal with waste disposal were that Kgatleng District Council had since secured 2.5 hectares adjacent to the current landfill for extension of the existing Pilane landfill and P4.8 million from the General Fund had been secured.

She said P515, 760.00 had been spent on fencing the extension area and on undertaking the Environmental Management Plan (EMP), which had since been completed.

Ms Tshirelesto said the remaining P4.2 million would be used for Design and Build project, which is consultancy and construction works. Furthermore she said dumping sites at Dikwididi and Mmathubudukwane villages were used to ease pressure on Pilane landfill.

The Member of Parliament for Mochudi West Mr Gilbert Mangole had asked the assistant minister if it was true that the Pilane landfill had reached its lifespan and if so, he should further state when the landfill reached its lifespan.

Mr Mangole also wanted the assistant minister to state when and where the new landfill site will be situated and what contingency measures were in place to deal with waste disposal in the interim. ENDS
